Sake has been a praised product of Settsu Province (today’s eastern Hyogo Prefecture and northern Osaka Prefecture). The brewers depicted here are called Tamba toji, the master brewers who came from Tanba Province (today’s northeastern Hyogo Prefecture and central Kyoto Prefecture) during the sake brewing season. They are regarded as the best sake maker in Japan, and this art piece conveys their spirit. Here, they are washing rice after polishing.
