Tarumizu City, Kagoshima Prefecture: Self-Owned Field Cultivation

Nonaka Nouen is a farm located in Izumi city, in the north-western part of Kagoshima Prefecture. The farm has been producing omugi (barley) for more than 50 years. Considered as ‘mugi artisans’, at one time, they were the only seed producers in Kagoshima prefecture and produced two-rowed omugi seeds that were used in fields all over the prefecture. Kagoshima prefecture was considered a region difficult to produce two-rowed omugi, however, through testing their knowledge, techniques, and experience they were able to create a process that upheld quality and yield. This lead to their omugi being used as ingredients for the shochu made by Den-en Shuzo Co., Ltd.
