Centered in Kainan City, Kishu lacquerware is one of Japan’s three major lacquerware production areas, along with Aizu and Wajima. Originating in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods in the 14th century, it was widely distributed nationwide by the mid-Edo period (18th century) and designated a Traditional Craft in 1978.
