Founded in the late 16th century by woodturners and lacquer artisans invited from Omi-Hino (today’s southern Shiga Prefecture), Aizu lacquerware is designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan. It incorporates a wide range of techniques, including mother-of-pearl inlay, lacquer painting, dry lacquer, maki-e, and hana-nuri. The exhibited piece is a set of toso ware, ceremonial sake vessels used to serve otoso, a spiced sake traditionally enjoyed at New Year’s.
