Developing from Sue ware, a type of high-fired, unglazed stoneware, of the Heian period and flourishing from the Kamakura period onward, Mino ware was designated a Traditional Craft in 1978. The Mino region of Gifu is Japan’s largest ceramic production area and is also known for Shino, Oribe, Kiseto, and Setoguro styles.
