Tokoname Ware(Aichi)
Artist: Koichiro Takeuchi
Tokoname ware is a type of stoneware produced mainly in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, and is counted among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with origins dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). It has long flourished as a major center of ceramics production and has been widely appreciated from the Pacific coast to the Seto Inland Sea region. The firmly high-fired mayaki (true-fired ware) of Tokoname has given rise to numerous sturdy, unadorned yet powerful everyday vessels, including large storage jars, pots, sake flasks, teapots, and ornamental objects.
