Inanoya Hanbei

An affectionate couple dressed in yukata, drinking sake together. The flowers drawn on the lanterns have a summery feel to them, but people enjoyed sake warm regardless of the season during the Edo period. This piece portrays a scene from “Koina Hanbei Mono”, a theatrical adaptation of the suicide of lovers, Koina and Hanbei, beneath a famous pine tree. Could this be the last sake they share?
